American Red Cross Blood Drive – Lexington @ Central Community College

American Red Cross will hold a blood drive at Central Community College 1501 Plum Creek Parkway, Room 204 Lexington on Wednesday September 5th at 9:00am – 3:00pm.
Blood and platelet donors of all blood types, especially type O negative and O positive, are urgently needed to replenish the blood supply following a critical summer blood shortage.
Donors are urged to make an appointment to donate using the free American Red Cross Blood Donor App, by visiting RedCrossBlood.org/sport-clips or by calling 1-800-RED CROSS (1-800-733-2767). The Red Cross and Sport Clips encourage donors to use the hashtag #SavingLivesLooksGood to share their new looks and invite others to give.

Entry fee of $100.00 per truck with 5 or more wheels – Classic cars, motorcycles and vehicles with 4 wheels or less $25.00 – Entry fee includes includes convoy, one goodie bag, dinner and entertainment.

Join the Iain Nicolson Audubon Center at Rowe Sanctuary for an exciting Rowe Adventures family program, “Radical Reptiles”, on Saturday, September 8, 2018 from 1:00-4:00 pm. Come out and explore the world of our scaly reptile friends. A live reptile presentation by UNL Professor Dennis Ferraro will occur from 2:00-3:00 pm. Learn about these cool creatures and go exploring to try and observe them in their habitat. Guided hikes will occur every half an hour during the event. Be sure to wear weather appropriate attire, including walking shoes.

This program is free to attend, but free will donations are encouraged.

UNK Homecoming Week – Kearney

This year’s celebration, set to the theme “Circus: Experience the Magic,” begins Monday and continues through Sept. 15, when the UNK football team battles Emporia State University at Ron and Carol Cope Stadium.

The homecoming parade begins 10 a.m. Saturday (Sept. 15) at the Museum of Nebraska Art, 2401 Central Ave., in downtown Kearney. The route progresses south on Central Avenue, west on Railroad Street, north on Third Avenue, west on 21st Street, south on Eighth Avenue and west on 20th Street before ending on Ninth Avenue.

Kickoff for the UNK football game is scheduled for 2 p.m. Homecoming royalty and UNK Athletic Hall of Fame inductees will be recognized at halftime, along with the announcement of homecoming sweepstakes winners – a week long competition between sororities, fraternities, residence halls and other student organizations. The UNK Sapphires Dance Team and Pride of the Plains Marching Band will also perform.

Nebr Extension ServSafe Manager Food Safety Training – North Platte @ West Central Research and Extension Center

The ServSafe Food Handler program is designed for kitchen employees including but not limited to cooks, dish machine operators, shipment receivers and employees who handle and prepare food in restaurants and other food service establishments. ServSafe Food Handler is the second level of the Nebraska Restaurant Association’s Food Safety First Program. The first level is the ServSafe training program for restaurant owners and food service managers.

Extension Educators, Andrea Nisley and Nancy Frecks will teach the ServSafe Food Handler course sponsored by the University of Nebraska-Lincoln Extension. Registrations are still being accepted. Fifteen employees need to be preregistered to be able to offer the course.

Horticulture Classes – North Platte @ Nebr Extension Office

School is back in session, and it is time for Extension horticulture classes to resume through Nebraska Extension, Starting September 11, at 6:30 p.m. Central Time.  Classes will be taught in person at the West Central Research and Extension Center for those participants in the North Platte area. Participants at a distance may participate in the same classes online, web-based teaching platform used by the University of Nebraska.

All horticulture classes will be taught by David Lott, District Horticulture Educator, or other Nebraska Extension faculty. These topics are fall or winter-related subjects to plan for the next growing season. Extension Master Gardeners may participate in these classes to meet educational hour requirement for the Master Gardener program.

The class dates and topics include:
September 11 – Fall Bulbs
September 18 – Insect Mode of Treatments
September 25 – Deer and Rabbit Proof (or at least not favorite!) plant materials
October 2 – Putting the Garden to Bed
October 9 – Weather Ready Landscapes
October 16 – Preparing and Judging Fair Veggie and Flower Exhibits
October 23 – Decoding Plant Names for Meaning
October 30 – Holiday Cactus, Poinsettias and Friends!

There is a $10 fee per class for the general public. Extension Master Gardeners may participate in all classes for free. Please register by the Monday before each class date for the classes each participant wants to join in. Please RSVP to the Nebraska Extension Office in North Platte at (308) 532-2683.
