The Iowa Soybean Association (ISA) is hosting a 4R Plus field day that could help farmers improve their profitability, yields and have a positive impact on the environment.
The field day will be held July 31, from 9:30 a.m. to 2:45 p.m. at the Iowa State University (ISU) Extension and Outreach Field Extension Education Laboratory (FEEL) Farm, 1928 240th St, Boone. Farmers, agronomists and other stakeholders will have the opportunity to hear from experts who will present ways to use the 4Rs of nutrient management — applying the right source, at the right rate, at the right time and in the right place.
The “plus” part of the program addresses how conservation practices coupled with good nutrient management can help farmers further improve their soil health and water quality. The goal is to achieve maximum profitability, yields and environmental stewardship.
The event is free, with lunch provided. Attendees participating the whole day can receive six continuing education credits (CEUs) toward their certified crop adviser (CCA) certification. The field day will feature six speakers — two ISU scientists, two ISA experts and two farmers — who will share their research and experiences:
– 4Rs of nitrogen management
– 4Rs of phosphorous and potassium research
– Insights into the profit-improving practice of variable rate nitrogen
– Practices that can help reduce soil erosion from Iowa fields
– Edge-of-field practices that can help prevent nutrient loss
– Twenty years of struggles and eventual solutions to implementing conservation practices
This event is sponsored in part by The Fertilizer Institute, Mosaic Fertilizer, the Iowa Agriculture Water Alliance, 4R Plus and the Iowa Soybean Association. Space is limited to the first 150 registrants. To sign up, email Sue Heath: sheath@iasoybeans.com.

The U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) encourages America’s farmers and ranchers to nominate candidates to lead, serve and represent their community on their local county committee. USDA’s Farm Service Agency (FSA) will accept nominations for county committee members beginning Friday, June 15, 2018.
Producers across the country are already serving on committees where they play a critical role in the day-to-day operations of FSA, making important decisions on programs dealing with disaster and conservation, emergencies, commodity price loan support, county office employment and other agricultural issues.
Producers can nominate themselves or others. Check your local USDA service center to see if your local administrative area is up for election this year. Organizations, including those representing beginning, women and minority producers, may also nominate candidates to better serve their communities. To be eligible to serve on an FSA county committee, producers must participate or cooperate in an FSA program and reside in the area where the election is being held.
To be considered, a producer must sign an FSA-669A nomination form. The form and other information about FSA county committee elections are available at www.fsa.usda.gov/elections. All nomination forms for the 2018 election must be postmarked or received in the local FSA office by Aug. 1, 2018. Visit farmers.gov for more information.

When dropping off your clean agricultural pesticide containers for recycling at one of Nebraska’s 18 participating recycling collection sites, you can feel good knowing the containers will be recycled into useful products that stay in the U.S. Now in its 27th year, the recycling program encourages producers to bring clean, dry, intact containers to a nearby collection site. There is no charge to producers. They must, however, triple- or pressure-rinse containers and drain them before dropping them off. Containers will be collected, ground up and reused in industry-approved products such as drain tile, underground utility conduit, pallets, landscape edging and nursery pots. To see additional sites that may be added, a container preparation checklist and more, see http://pested.unl.edu/recycling.
